Resource Management

Current Status Critical Needs Long Range Goals

1 Funded Depreciation: funds are set aside each year to replace functionally obsolete technologies 40% of the annual allocation for "funded depreciation" is earmarked for information technologies and audio-visuals Increase annual allocation; review expectations for five year functional life of some technologies Implement predictable and adequate budget process for hardware replacement

2 Displacement of old: when appropriately adopted, new technology should displace old technology to improve supportability; technologies should not be accumulated We continue to accumulate hardware and software thereby increasing support demands Replace obsolete, hard-to-support systems with industry standard systems using a highly consistent, supportable software complement Work with clients to define "old" and "standard" systems on a regular basis

3 Special Funding: respond to rapid changes in expectations and needs for technology with special funding strategies, such as extramural grant applications On-going process: Pew, HHMI, Mellon, Culpeper and others Strong emphasis on collaborative work with academic departments for extramural grant applications; residential technology needs funded on-budget Continued leadership in grantsmanship

4 Inventory: technology assets (hardware, software) are cataloged with appropriate levels of detail Information is current (1996); Utopia Inventory system in use Utopia data is verified and used extensively in providing client support services Asset management systems in place to forecast replacement needs
